Okstindan is Northern Norway’s highest mountain range and is located in Hemnes municipality in Nordland. Okstindbreen spans 54 km² and is Norway’s 7th largest glacier. Okstindbreen is special with all its mountain peaks that protrude from the ice – a total of 12 peaks over 1500 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.):
Oksskolten 1916 m.a.s.l.
Okshornet 1901 m.a.s.l.
Tvillingtinden 1824 m.a.s.l.
Okstinden 1808 m.a.s.l.
Svartfjell 1749 m.a.s.l.
Vesttinden 1711 m.a.s.l.
Okskalvan 1626 m.a.s.l. – 1620 m.a.s.l. – 1591 m.a.s.l.
Bessedørtinden 1562 m.a.s.l.
Hekkelfjellet 1560 m.a.s.l.
Oksfjelltuva 1525 m.a.s.l.
Okstindan is an ideal area for hiking. The area is well-equipped with miles of marked hiking trails managed by the Norwegian Trekking Association (Den Norske Turistforening), and it’s possible to stay overnight in several of the association’s cabins in the area. Among these is Rabothytta – a new and modern cabin with excellent facilities and fantastic views of the mountain peaks. Other cabins in the network around Okstindan include Gressvasshytta, Kjennsvasshytta, and Gråfjellhytta. Korgfjellet Fjellstue is a fantastic starting point for hikes in Okstindan.

If you are in good physical shape, a summit hike up Oksskolten (1916 m.a.s.l.) is well worth the effort. The ascent up the ridge is steep and long, but once you reach Northern Norway’s highest peak, it offers a fantastic view. From the summit, you can see across Okstindbreen and the other peaks that make up Okstindan. On clear days, you can see the entire Helgeland coast – from Vega in the south to Lofotveggen in the north. To the east, you can see Tärnafjällen in Sweden.
If one peak isn’t enough, Okstinden (1808 m.a.s.l.), Tvillingtindan (1824 m.a.s.l.), and Vesttinden (1711 m.a.s.l.) are good candidates for further adventures.

Among the mountain peaks in Okstindan, you will find Okstindbreen. Okstindbreen is the eighth largest glacier in Norway, and easily accessible for glacier hiking. Embarking on a glacier hike is an activity that requires experience and the right equipment. If you wish for a safe trip across Okstindbreen, we can put you in touch with a local guide who has the necessary knowledge to take you on an experience you won’t soon forget.
